There is great turmoil in the politics of West Bengal. Madan Mitra, a trusted aide of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has given a big blow to rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee by joining her group. When Mamata broke ties with the Congress party, Mitra stood with her; However, now he has resigned from all TMC posts. The Kamarhati MLA said he has resigned from all national and state committees of the Mamata-led TMC. He also announced his resignation from the post of Chief Whip with immediate effect. Speaking to reporters after meeting the rebel leader, Mitra said, “I have changed my room, not my house. I will remain a part of TMC.”
What did Madan Mitra say?
He further added, “I had suggested to Abhishek Banerjee that he step aside for six months or a year. I told him, ‘Let’s strengthen the party, and then you can come back and take your seat,’ but he refused. He insisted that he would not leave the party. Even though the party was sinking, a decision was taken – or rather the party was forced to accept – that even if everyone else was ruined, saving Abhishek was the most important thing.” It’s important. It’s very sad.”
“I will remain an MLA”
Madan Mitra further said, “The party belongs to everyone, yet it seems to be limited to serving only Abhishek. I humbly request Mamata ji to see this as a marathon. On the way, we will definitely come face to face; let’s see which horse comes out ahead. I have resigned from all posts, although I will continue to be an MLA. I have severed all ties with Trinamool; basically, this means that I am practically no longer a Trinamool MLA.” The development is being seen as a major blow to the Mamata-led Trinamool, which has been facing an unprecedented insurgency for the past few months.
