New Delhi, July 18 (IANS). The government-backed Aadhaar app has crossed the 4 crore (40 million) download mark. This achievement indicates rapid adoption of digital identity services. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said on Saturday that millions of Indian residents are availing the benefits of updating Aadhaar related information, managing security settings and other services through this app.
According to the ministry, the Aadhaar app has now become a one-stop digital platform for many Aadhaar related services, through which facilities like updating address, updating mobile number and email, biometric locking/unlocking and e-Aadhaar download are available at home.
Since the launch of the app, more than 11.65 lakh addresses have been updated through it. With this, people do not need to go to Aadhaar enrollment or update center and they can update their information sitting at home.
Apart from this, around 49 lakh mobile numbers have been updated so far through the app, enabling users to keep their Aadhaar related contact details correct and updated.
After the email update facility started from July 1, about 12.5 lakh email IDs have been added or updated so far. The government said that earlier a fee of Rs 75 was charged for this service, but now this facility has been made available free of cost through the Aadhaar app till 31 December 2026.
The privacy and security features available in the app have also been adopted by the people on a large scale. Biometric lock/unlock facility has been used more than 1.91 crore times so far. This feature allows Aadhaar holders to instantly lock or unlock their biometric data, thereby reducing the possibility of its misuse.
The ministry said the Aadhaar app has been designed to enable Aadhaar number holders to show, share and verify their identity easily, securely and with a privacy-first approach. Besides, it is also contributing in furthering the goal of developed India under the Digital India Mission and making people’s lives easier.
Earlier this month, the government had said that more than 2.5 lakh people had updated their email IDs in their Aadhaar within the first two days of the launch of the new feature in the Aadhaar app.
Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has now provided the facility to Aadhaar holders to add or update their email ID directly through the Aadhaar app, for which there is no need to visit any Aadhaar enrollment or update centre.
