Today, 22nd July is ‘World Brain Day’. Its aim is to spread awareness about the importance of maintaining good brain health. Poor mental health can have a negative impact on every aspect of life. On the occasion of ‘World Brain Day’, we are talking about important aspects related to the brain health of children. Nowadays, excessive use of mobile phones – or spending too much time in front of screens – is weakening children’s brains. Additionally, their physical activity levels have also decreased.
Children’s brain is continuously developing. In the early years, their learning ability, memory, attention span and problem-solving skills develop rapidly. On ‘World Brain Day’, let’s take a look at common everyday habits that can directly impact children’s brain health, IQ and attention span.
Habits that have a bad effect on the brain
Dr. Sonia Lal Gupta (Senior Neurologist, Stroke Specialist and Joint Managing Director of Metro Group of Hospitals) says that the habit of watching mobile phones, television or other screens till late night can cause sleep problems. This can cause irritability, reduced concentration and reduced learning ability in children. Experts say that nowadays children are less physically active, which also has a bad effect on their brain health. Additionally, excessive consumption of junk food, sugar and processed foods can affect children’s energy levels and ability to concentrate.
keep these things in mind
Adequate sleep and balanced diet: Good sleep is important for better development of mental health in children. During sleep, the brain organizes information learned throughout the day, thereby strengthening memory. A diet rich in nutrients is also important for the development of mental health. Experts say that foods rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, iron, vitamins and minerals help in improving brain functioning. Childhood habits impact neurological development – the process of neuroplasticity – whereby new neural connections are formed – occurs rapidly during childhood and adolescence. Things like lack of sleep, prolonged exposure to screens, and stress can interfere with this process, affecting the ability to think, concentrate, and learn. Therefore, it is important for children to get adequate sleep and limit screen time.
Importance of physical activity – In today’s digital age, children spend too much time on mobile devices and screens. Conversely, sports and physical exercise improve blood flow to the brain, which increases the ability to concentrate and learn new things. Instead of just focusing on reading books, children should be encouraged to engage in activities like art, music, puzzles, storytelling and learning new skills. These activities activate different parts of the brain and promote creativity. Too much study pressure can have a negative impact on a child’s mental health; Parents should communicate openly with their children and provide a positive environment that promotes their interests.
