Leh, 26 September (IANS). Three days after the Leh violence, the police on Friday arrested environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk. He is accused of inciting violence. In view of the situation, the Internet service has been discontinued with immediate effect.
According to the Leh police, on September 24, the police had registered several FIRs against Sonam Wangchuk on charges of abetting the protesters for violence, after which they were arrested on Friday.
On September 10, Wangchuk started a fast on the demand for the inclusion of the region in Leh city in the sixth schedule, giving state status and security of sensitive ecosystems of Ladakh region. After this, Sonam Wangchuk broke her fast on 24 September when a large -scale violence started in the city.
On 24 September, uncontrolled mobs in Leh city threw stones at security forces. The mob set a CRPF vehicle on fire. Not only this, there was arson in the BJP office and the top organization’s office of Leh and the DGP vehicle of Ladakh was also damaged by the protesters.
The security forces fired on the situation uncontrollable, killing four protesters and injured around 70.
Authorities imposed curfew in Leh city to restore law and order. Curfew was also imposed in Kargil city on Thursday evening. Police detained several protesters.
The Ministry of Home Affairs quashed the FCRA registration certificate of Sonam Wangchuk, founder of Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), to violate the FCRA Act.
Here, Wangchuk, who won the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2018, has denied all the allegations against him. He had told reporters on Thursday that his non-profit organization had not taken foreign donations, but has done business transactions with the United Nations, Swiss and Italian organizations and paid all taxes.
Wangchuk said, “The central government considered it a foreign donation. I consider it to be a mistake of them and so I have no objection to it.”
The police have registered an FIR against some Nepali citizens and those in the city of Doda in Jammu region who were involved in the violence. He is now hospitalized to treat injuries in the action of security forces.
In 2019, when Ladakh was made a union territory, this decision of the Center was widely welcomed and Sonam Wangchuk was at the forefront of that reception. Later, he led the protest against the Center and hunger strike for inclusion in the sixth schedule, state status and other demands. The central government believes that a large -scale violence in a very peaceful border area of Ladakh has not been spontaneous, but has been provoked by outsiders to create unrest in this peaceful region.
