Mauni Amavasya is the new moon day of Krishna Paksha of Magh month, which is also known as Maghi Amavasya or Magh Amavasya. This festival is considered very auspicious for silence, bathing, charity and self-purification. According to the scriptures, sage Manu was born on this day, that is why it is called ‘Mauni’ Amavasya (Mauni means silent). By worshiping Lord Vishnu and Shiva silently on this day, one gets freedom from the sins of many births. The biggest bath of Magh Mela in Prayagraj takes place on this day. According to Drik Panchang, Magha Krishna Amavasya Tithi will start at 12:03 AM on January 18 and end at 01:21 AM on January 19. Based on Udaya Tithi (time of sunrise), Mauni Amavasya will be observed on January 18, 2026 (Sunday), as Amavasya Tithi will be at the time of sunrise (7:15 am) on this day. Magh Shukla Pratipada will start at sunrise on 19th January.
Religious significance of Mauni Amavasya
On Mauni Amavasya, the water of Ganga is considered as sacred as nectar. Taking bath in Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj is considered most fruitful. Taking bath at home with water mixed with Ganga water also gives virtue. It is believed that taking bath on this day washes away the sins committed unknowingly and brings blessings. It is said in the scriptures that one gets salvation by taking bath in Sangam on Magh Amavasya. This day is for silent devotion, which is believed to bring God’s blessings quickly. What to do on Mauni Amavasya?
Take bath in Brahma Muhurta (time before dawn). Pray peacefully. Donate warm clothes, blankets, sesame seeds, jaggery, rice, wheat, fruits or black sesame seeds. These things are believed to please Shani and Rahu. Donate to the needy or Brahmins. Avoid eating tamasic food (food considered impure or harmful), anger and lying. After bath, perform Vishnu or Shiva puja. Following these rules brings happiness and prosperity throughout the year. Chant ‘Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevay’ or ‘Om Namah Shivay’ on this day. Offer water to the Peepal tree and circumambulate it.
What not to do on Mauni Amavasya?
Don’t sleep till late in the morning. Mauni Amavasya is a day of restraint, so avoid fights, arguments or insults at home. Do not consume tamasic food like meat, alcohol, garlic and onion. Eat satvik food or keep fast. Negative energies remain active on Amavasya night, so do not go to deserted places or near cremation grounds at night. Don’t get angry, lie or talk negatively on this day. Follow celibacy.

In 2026, Mauni Amavasya will fall on Sunday, hence it will be called ‘Ravi-Mauni Amavasya’. This coincidence is very auspicious to get the blessings of Sun God. On this day, take water in a copper vessel, add red flowers and rice grains in it and offer it to the Sun. After bathing, offer water mixed with milk to the Peepal tree, light a lamp and do 11 parikrama. This removes Pitra Dosh, Shani Dosh and bad luck.
