Salvation: According to Shiva Purana, Maharishi Durvasa had cursed the people of Shiva to become vampires. According to mythological belief, after the penance of God, Ganga came and freed these Ganas from this curse.
Shiv Vallabhpur to Garhmukteshwar: It is believed that the ancient name of this pilgrimage was ‘Shiv Vallabhpur’ and due to the liberation of Shivganas here, it was named ‘Gan Mukteshwar’, which gradually became ‘Gadh Mukteshwar’.
Nrigkoop: There is an ancient stepwell near the temple, known as ‘Nrigkoop’. It is mentioned in the Mahabharata that King Nrig had become a chameleon due to a curse and lived in this well. This well is still famous by the name of ‘Nakka Kuan’. Other Mysteries: Some people believe that there are sprouts on the Shivalinga in this temple, which scientists have not been able to explain and the priests consider it to be the spiritual power of the place.
Historical importance: This temple is also associated with the Mahabharata period. It is believed that King Parikshit came to this place in search of salvation after his death.
