In April 2026, Tata Motors maintained its strong lead in the electric passenger vehicle segment and remained ahead of other companies including Mahindra, MG.
India’s electric passenger vehicle (EV) segment recorded total sales of 23,240 units in April 2026. In this, Tata Motors, Mahindra and JSW MG Motor together have acquired the highest stake. Many interesting things were seen in this month’s sales report, which included the increasing hold of VinFast and Maruti Suzuki and the excellent growth of Kia.
Tata Motors topped the list with 8,543 units. This is a huge increase of 3.5 percent more than March 2026 and 77.2 percent more than April 2025. The company has many EV models like Tiago EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV, Curvv EV and Harrier EV, which make it strong in the market.
Mahindra stood at second position, which sold 5,413 units. Its sales registered an increase of 64 percent year-on-year. The company’s INGLO platform based Mahindra BE 6, Mahindra XEV 9e and Mahindra XEV 9S are getting good response. JSW MG Motor stood third with 5,006 units sold. Although this is slightly less than March, it is 32.5 percent more than last year.

VinFast has recorded the highest monthly growth. Its sales increased from 691 units in March to 1,232 units in April. At the same time, Maruti Suzuki has sold 1,231 units, which is about 30 percent more than in March. The company’s e Vitara Electric is now slowly making its place in the midsize electric SUV segment. It comes with 49 kWh and 61 kWh battery pack options and has a claimed range of up to 543 kilometers.
Hyundai Motor India’s sales declined 30.9 percent year-on-year to 516 units, although there was a slight increase compared to March. Whereas BYD India has registered sales of 469 units. Kia has recorded the highest year-on-year growth. Its sales have increased by 905.9 percent to 342 units.
BMW’s sales in the luxury EV segment more than doubled to 300 units. At the same time, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla and Volvo have also recorded stable sales. Many new models are going to be launched in the Indian EV market in the coming 12 to 18 months, as many companies are preparing to strengthen their electric car lineup in view of the increasing demand.
