However, Mercedes-Benz India has a distinct dominance among them. In fact, this company has said that from January 2026, every car sold in the country can run on E25 ethanol-blended petrol. This makes it one of the first luxury car makers in India to prepare its portfolio even before the higher ethanol blending norms come into effect.

Recently, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has released technical standards for higher ethanol blends such as E22, E25, E27 and E30, reflecting the government’s efforts to create a regulatory framework for fuels beyond E20.
Speaking at the launch of the Mercedes-AMG E 53, Santosh Iyer, MD and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, said that the company has upgraded its India portfolio keeping in mind the future fuel regulations. Commenting on the decision, Iyer said, “Mercedes customers expect us to understand the laws and upcoming trends. E25 is being discussed a lot. It may not be applicable, but we want to provide cars that are compatible with it.”
According to Iyer, Mercedes-Benz has adopted E25 compatibility to future-proof its products as discussions are underway to increase ethanol blending beyond E20. He said that the company had similarly made its India line-up E20-compatible from 2020 itself, which is about 3 years before this fuel became mandatory. The announcement comes just weeks after Mercedes-Benz raised concerns about adulteration of fuel instead of the E20 blend. The company had said that fluctuations in fuel quality can affect the performance of the vehicle and had demanded strict quality control when more ethanol blends are introduced.
Mercedes-Benz said it will continue to offer a mix of internal combustion engines, battery electric and plug-in hybrid models in India rather than focusing on any one powertrain technology. “Our job and responsibility is to provide all types of options, including E25 gasoline,” he said. The AMG E 53 is the brand’s latest plug-in hybrid model in India after the recently introduced S-Class Plug-in Hybrid. Mercedes-Benz says customer demand in India remains strong for both conventional ICE models and electric vehicles, supporting its multi-powertrain strategy.
