Tata Motors has secured the first position in the electric car segment in the sales of electric cars in May 2026, leaving behind brands like Mahindra, MG Motor, Maruti Suzuki and VinFast.
The electric passenger vehicle market in India continues its strong growth in May 2026. According to retail data from FADA, a total of 26,682 electric cars were registered in May 2026, which is 81.2 percent more than 14,725 units registered in the same month last year. An increase of 2 percent has also been recorded in sales as compared to April 2026.
Tata Motors once again maintained its dominance in the electric car segment. The company recorded sales of 10,340 units in May 2026, whereas in the same month last year this figure was 5,083 units. In this way Tata has achieved an annual growth of 103.4 percent. Strong demand for Tiago EV, Punch EV and Nexon EV kept the company leading in the market.
Tata Motors’ share in total electric car sales in May 2026 was about 39 percent. Mahindra stood at second place, which sold 6,210 units in May 2026. Compared to last year’s 2,891 units, the company has registered an impressive growth of 114.8 percent. The popularity of the XEV 9e, BE 6 and the new three-row XEV 9S have further strengthened Mahindra’s position.

JSW MG Motor India stood at third place. The company sold 4,984 units in May 2026, mainly thanks to the MG Windsor EV. Although sales declined by 8 percent compared to April 2026, the company has registered a growth of 8.4 percent on an annual basis. Maruti Suzuki stood at fourth position and the company has sold 1,591 electric cars.
VinFast secured the fifth position with sales of 1,238 units. The Vietnamese company is rapidly expanding its presence in the Indian market through its VF series of electric SUVs. Talking about premium and luxury brands, BYD registered a year-on-year growth of 10.5 percent with sales of 686 units. BMW achieved a growth of 75.1 per cent by selling 352 units, while Mercedes-Benz sold 208 units and registered a monthly growth of 76.3 per cent over April 2026.
Hyundai and Kia, on the other hand, had relatively low sales. Hyundai sold 460 units and Kia sold 349 units. American EV maker Tesla recorded registration of 35 units after its entry in the Indian market in May 2026. Whereas Volvo has recorded sales of 29 units and Stellantis has recorded sales of 22 units. Overall, the electric car market performed strongly in May 2026, with Tata Motors, Mahindra and MG Motor maintaining the top three positions.
