When we think of insects, we often think of small, agile ants or flying butterflies. But there are some creatures in the natural world that completely overturn this notion. These invertebrates (creatures without a backbone) are so big and strange that it becomes difficult to believe after seeing them. Whether they’re hiding in the depths of the deep ocean or in the darkness of the jungle, these creatures will make you wonder if you’re really safe.
1. Killer Hornet
The Asian giant wasp, also known as the “killer hornet,” is as terrifying as its name suggests. It is as big as our thumb and its sting is extremely poisonous which can even kill a human being. It is counted among the most dangerous animals in Japan. They attack not alone but in whole swarms and destroy bee hives, causing huge losses to beekeepers.
2. Goliath Bird-Eating Spider
The world’s largest spider, with its massive 12-inch leg span seems perfect for any horror story. Although its name means bird-eating spider, it mainly eats insects. When it feels threatened, it rubs its legs and makes a hissing sound, which is enough to scare any human being. Its sting does not threaten human life, but it is quite painful.
3. Giant Weta
The Giant Weta, found in New Zealand’s Little Barrier Island, resembles a giant cricket. It can weigh up to 71 grams and be up to 8 inches long, making it one of the heaviest insects in the world. They are peaceful and depend on plants, but their vastness is what makes them scary. Hollywood film director Peter Jackson named his special effects company ‘Veta’ after this creature.
4. Giant Centipede
The Giant Centipede, found in the Amazon forests, is a predator known for its agility and cunning. It can grow up to a foot long and often hunts frogs, birds, and even small bats. It is quite aggressive by nature and can bite anyone if teased. Its bite is not fatal, but is very painful.
5. Giant Sea Spider
These creatures are not actually spiders, but they look like them. The legs of these strange deep sea spiders can be up to a foot long. Their body is so small that most of their organs are inside their legs. They drink the juice of creatures like jellyfish and anemones with their long trunk. Their structure is so unique that looking at them it does not seem that they can be true.
6. Locusts
Even though locusts may seem small and harmless individually, when they come together in billions of them, they are no less than a natural disaster. Their huge flocks fly like helicopters and completely destroy the crops of the fields, causing huge losses to the farmers and sometimes even leading to starvation.
7. Giant Isopod
Giant isopods are found in the deep sea at depths of more than 2,000 meters. These giant, shell-clad crustaceans have been around since prehistoric times and scavenge the ocean floor by eating dead organisms. Their scary appearance is just visible, in reality they are no threat to humans.
8. Colossal Squid
Even larger than the giant squid, the colossal squid is considered the world’s largest invertebrate. The largest specimen found is up to 10 meters long. But scientists believe that they can be even bigger. Their tentacles have hooks on them, which they use to catch prey. This is such a mysterious creature that makes deep sea fantasies even more horrifying.
9. Japanese Spider Crab
Looking at the Japanese Spider Crab, it looks as if it has come out of a science fiction movie. With legs spanning up to 6 metres, it holds the record for the longest legs for any arthropod. It is found at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. This giant crab is not at all dangerous to humans and mainly makes its living by eating dead sea creatures.
10. Lion’s Man Jellyfish
Looking at this jellyfish it seems that it is a sea flower, but its tentacles can be up to 37 meters long, which is longer than that of the blue whale. These tentacles contain poison, which usually causes only mild pain to humans, but their length is so great that they can touch you without you being able to see. They slowly move forward while flowing in the sea, which makes it look even more scary.
