New Delhi . Congress Working Committee member Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary has once again raised a serious issue related to the registration of Waqf properties and sought intervention from President Draupadi Murmu. He has written a letter requesting that the deadline for registering Waqf properties on the ‘Umeed’ portal be extended, because West Bengal is currently facing huge problems. Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary said that West Bengal has the highest number of Waqf properties in the country (more than 1.5 lakh). Most of these properties have incomplete or unavailable historical documents, making it almost impossible to register all the properties within the stipulated time frame. He said that this problem is more serious in West Bengal than in other states. In his letter, Chaudhary explained in detail that Waqf properties are mainly used for religious-social activities, education and as cemeteries. Describing these properties as extremely important for the community, he said that the lack of documents is not a result of anyone’s carelessness, but the historical and cultural nature of these properties.
He said that the biggest difficulty faced by the Waqf Board members and property managers is that due to lack of sufficient paper evidence, it is difficult to complete the registration standards on time.
Chaudhary also said that while registration is happening relatively easily in other states, the situation is completely different in West Bengal. The structural challenges and documentation deficiencies here are deeper, hence the state should get special relief.
He requested the President to extend the last date of registration until every Waqf property in West Bengal is registered on the ‘Umeed’ portal.
Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary said that he hopes that the President will show sensitivity on this serious issue and decide to extend the deadline in the interest of the state.
Earlier, he had also written a letter to the Union Minister of Minority Affairs requesting to extend the deadline.
