New Delhi. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken major action. On September 18, the Commission removed 474 registered political parties (RUPP) from its list, intensifying its campaign to make the electoral system clean and transparent. Also started action on 359 RUPPs.

This action of the Commission was taken under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which provides that if a political party does not participate in any election for six consecutive years, it can be removed from the list of registered parties. With the move, a total of 808 RUPPs have been removed from the list in the last two months, including 334 RPPs removed on 9 August.

The Commission has launched a nationwide campaign from 2019, aimed at identifying and removing the RUPP that has failed to fulfill the scheduled conditions. The purpose of this campaign is to remove the inactive or compliant parties and make the electoral process clean. Registered parties get privileges like insignia, tax exemption, but it is mandatory for them to follow the rules.

In the second phase, ECI has identified 359 other RUPPs, who have failed to submit their annual audited accounts in the last three financial years or who contested the election, but did not file the necessary election expenditure report. These parties are from 23 different states and union territories of the country. Before the removal of these parties, to ensure fairness, the Chief Executive Officers of the concerned states have been instructed to issue show cause notices. In response to these notices, parties will be given an opportunity to hear, and the final decision will be taken based on the report of the Chief Executive Officers.

This step of ECI is not only an important initiative towards strengthening the election system, but also ensures that only active and rules are registered. This campaign will continue in the future as well so that the credibility and transparency of the electoral process remains.

The highest number of RUPP removed in the second phase is 121 from Uttar Pradesh. At the same time, in the action being taken under the third phase, the maximum number of 127 is from Uttar Pradesh.
