A major change is about to take place in the administrative environment of Delhi. Delhi Cabinet has approved increasing the number of districts from 11 to 13. This decision is one of the biggest administrative changes in the capital in recent years. With this change, for the first time the boundaries of the districts are aligned with the Delhi Municipal Corporation zone. This has eliminated decades-old jurisdictional differences. How the new district is structured
The newly declared districts reflect changes made to balance administrative boundaries. Old Delhi district will replace the old Sadar zone. Shahdara North and Shahdara South will be created by merging East and North East districts. The larger North district will be divided into Civil Lines and Old Delhi, and Najafgarh will be carved out of the larger South West area.
What benefit will the general public get from this?
This big change will greatly benefit the general public. In fact, with the formation of new districts, people will no longer have to travel long distances to get essential government services like property registration, land records, certificates or grievance redressal. Smaller districts mean closer proximity to government offices and less waiting time. Promoting service delivery and transparency
One of the strongest arguments for creating more districts is better service delivery. Smaller administrative units enable faster decision making and speed up the application process. For decades, Delhi’s administrative and municipal boundaries were misaligned, often leading to confusion and delays in governance. By realigning the districts with Delhi Municipal Corporation zones, the government has completely eliminated overlapping areas.
Benefits of Mini Secretariat
Each of the 13 districts will soon have a modern mini secretariat. With this, almost every big government office will come under one roof. From sub-registrar services to revenue office, land records department and grievance cell, people will get access to a single window system. This will significantly reduce paperwork, coordination will be better and public administration will be more efficient.
Better Land Records and Digital Governance
Land management has long been one of the slowest and most difficult administrative areas of Delhi. With the number of smaller districts and subdivisions increasing from 33 to 39, the government aims to accelerate the digitization of land records. Its purpose is also to ensure more accurate documentation and reduce disputes. Local officials will be able to monitor land related works more efficiently. This will increase transparency in property registration and mutation process.
