Tension has been increasing in the Lok Sabha since the beginning of the current budget session of the Parliament. The main opposition party Congress has now started a campaign against Speaker Om Birla. Opposition parties including Congress have presented a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla. This notice has been given to the Lok Sabha Secretariat and the Lok Sabha Secretary General.
According to reports, the opposition has cited the rejection of the speech of opposition leader Rahul Gandhi during the discussion on the motion of thanks on the President’s address as the basis for the no-confidence motion. This no-confidence notice has been filed against the Lok Sabha Speaker under Article 94C.
Congress’s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, confirmed the presentation of the no-confidence motion. He told that a total of 119 MPs have signed this motion. This notice was given to the Lok Sabha Secretary General at 1:14 pm. After the opposition submitted a no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha Secretariat, Speaker Om Birla will not be able to preside over the proceedings of the House.
When the Lok Sabha proceedings began at 11 am on Tuesday, Om Birla did not come to the chair to preside. PC Mohan of the Deputy Speaker’s panel initiated the proceedings. However, due to the uproar by the opposition, the House could not function even for two minutes and the House was adjourned first till 12 noon and then till 2 pm.
Rijiju held a meeting with floor leaders
To resolve the ongoing deadlock in the Lok Sabha, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister held a meeting with floor leaders of all parties. According to reports, in a meeting with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju in the Speaker’s Chamber, it was agreed to restart the House from 2 pm. According to the report, the opposition is ready to end the deadlock on the condition of lifting the suspension of eight MPs. However, no official statement has been issued yet. Shashi Tharoor can start discussion on the budget in the House at 2 pm.
