Dhaka, February 17 (). New MPs of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party took oath of office at the South Plaza of the National Parliament in Dhaka on Tuesday after a landslide victory in the 13th parliamentary election. Along with this, BNP President Tariq Rehman has given a big blow to Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus. Actually, BNP MPs have not taken oath as members of the Constitution Reform Council.

Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin administered the oath on Tuesday morning as per the country’s Constitution. Actually, due to the vacancy of the post of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament, the Chief Election Commissioner administered the oath. The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by Parliament Secretariat Secretary Kaneez Maula.

Bangladeshi media has reported that BNP MPs did not take oath as members of the Constitution Reform Council. BNP President Tariq Rahman took oath as MP from Dhaka-17 constituency. During this, his wife, Zubaida Rehman and his daughter Zaima Rehman were present at the swearing-in ceremony.

Let us tell you, after the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government in 2024, the interim government under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus and 30 political parties together presented a plan for constitutional, electoral and administrative reforms in July 2025.

Bangladeshi media The Daily Star reported that at the beginning of the swearing-in ceremony, BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed said that at the behest of party chief Tariq Rahman, all newly elected BNP MPs have been instructed not to sign the Constitution Reform Council form because they were not elected as members of the council.

On the other hand, according to Bangladeshi newspaper Prothom Alo, newly elected MPs from a coalition of 11 parties including Jamaat-e-Islami and National Citizen Party (NCP) were considering not taking the oath. However, the elected MPs of Jamaat were sworn in at the same place.

Let us tell you, the referendum on the July National Charter was also held on February 12 along with the 13th parliamentary elections, in which voting was conducted in 299 out of 300 constituencies of the country. In the election, BNP won 209 seats, while radical Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami got 68 seats. Additionally, the National Citizen Party (NCP) won six, independent candidates won seven seats, Bangladesh Khilafat Majlish won two, Islami Andolan Bangladesh won one, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) (under the leadership of Andaliv Rahman Partho) won one, Ganadhikar Parishad won one, Ganasamhati Andolan one and Khilafat Majlish won one seat.

In this situation, the BNP led electoral alliance won a total of 212 constituencies, while the Jamaat led electoral alliance won 77 constituencies.
