Dhaka. The situation in Bangladesh is becoming frightening day by day. Recently, the case of murder of an independent candidate engulfed the country in the fire of violence. On the other hand, in the latest case an NCP leader has been shot. Former diplomat KP Fabian had a special conversation with about the current situation in Bangladesh and the atrocities on Hindus. KP Fabian said, “Bangladesh is moving towards chaos and anarchy, and it is getting deeper into that state. Now what are the reasons for this? One, Mohammad Yunus has not been able to control the situation, and forces inimical to India, Jamaat-e-Islami and others have gained political power, and more importantly, Pakistan and China have always been working overtime to spoil the relations between India and Bangladesh.” He said, “I also saw Sheikh Hasina’s statement. She is right that Yunus has been a disappointment, but we should not forget that Yunus came there because of their bad governance. In fact, as the United Nations has found, when students protested against a policy of reservation, 1400 people were killed. A policy which was absolutely, to put it mildly, unnecessary, so it is their responsibility that it was because of their bad governance.” Only such a situation arose where a man like Yunus came to power.”
The former diplomat said, “Now Yunus’ responsibility was to prepare the country for the elections as soon as possible without changing the foreign policy or anything else, which he did not do and in fact he tried to postpone the elections as much as possible. Now let’s see, let us see whether the elections in February will be free and fair or not. Let us hope that it will be free and fair and if we can help in making it free and fair, then we should do that. India is very friendly towards Bangladesh. There has been a more individualistic foreign policy. You know, it’s not a good policy to put all your eggs in one basket.”
He further said that the question of whether Sheikh Hasina should be sent back to Bangladesh cannot be answered with yes or no as it is part of a larger question between the relationship between Bangladesh and India. Now, it is in India’s advantage to see that relations with Bangladesh improve as soon as possible. If anyone in Bangladesh thinks that it can have deep, strong, big relations with Pakistan and China and at the same time have hostile relations with India, then no, he is absolutely wrong.
The former diplomat said, “For Bangladesh, good relations with India are very important. India should have used diplomacy, months ago, in August last year itself, not public statements, diplomacy… and India has been very inactive diplomatically. If the High Commissioner’s ability to coordinate with the government of the time does not work, then we will have to think about other things. This state of deteriorating relations is neither your fault nor your Neither is it good for us. If you are ready to appoint another special envoy, let him spend as much time as he wants without informing the media, and let him come up with an understanding, which will be sent to the respective governments, but it has not been tried. Are doing, and India diplomatically speaking, does not exist.”
