Patna . Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has welcomed the recognition of Maithili language as a mother tongue subject in the curriculum of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) from classes 1 to 8. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary has called this initiative of the Central Government a matter of pride. The Chief Minister expressed happiness on the social networking site He further wrote that recognition of Maithili language as a mother tongue subject from class 1 to secondary level in the curriculum of the Central Board of Secondary Education is a matter of pride for the cultural identity and linguistic pride of Mithila. He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the preservation and promotion of Indian languages, culture and traditions is continuously getting new strength. Chief Minister Choudhary said that this decision will not only give new identity and respect to Maithili language, but will also become a powerful medium to connect the coming generations with their mother tongue, culture and roots.
Let us tell you that CBSE has included Maithili in the CBSE curriculum at the secondary level in the academic session 2026-27. This information has been given by Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Jayant Chaudhary in a letter written to MP Dr. Gopalji Thakur. In the letter issued on May 19, 2026, the Minister said that after the request sent by MP Dr. Thakur on February 8, 2026, the matter was investigated by the National Council of Educational Research and Training. The investigation found that under the National Education Policy-2020, special emphasis has been laid on providing primary education to children in their mother tongue.
According to the policy, arrangements for education are to be made through mother tongue till class 5 and if possible till class 8. The Union Minister clarified in his letter that Maithili is one of the 22 recognized languages ​​included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. Primers have been developed by NCERT in 121 Indian languages ​​including Maithili.
