New Delhi. CP Radhakrishnan, elected for the post of Vice President, was sworn in as the 15th Vice President of India on Friday. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Radhakrishnan, 67, 67 -year -old Radhakrishnan in the Vice Presidential election held on 9 September. Sudarshan Reddy was defeated by a margin of 152 votes.

This election was necessary under the rules under the rules due to the sudden resignation of the then Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21. This is because the next Vice President is to be elected within 60 days of the end of the terms of the outgoing Vice President. Dhankhar also attended the ceremony, which was his first public presence after resigning as Vice President.

The Election Commission of India conducts elections for the post of Vice President. Under Article 324 (1) of the Indian Constitution, the Election Commission has the right to superintendent, direction and control to conduct elections for the posts of President and Vice President. Detailed provisions have been made regarding this in the rules made under the President and Vice President Election Act 1952 and in it.

The important thing is that the Vice Presidents in the country are not directly elected by the public. This election is conducted by an electoral college, which includes members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha (both elected and nominated). It does not include members of state assemblies. It also occurs by the method of proportional representation and single transferable vote, and the voting remains secret.

The election schedule is determined in such a way that the elected Vice President can take over the next day after the end of the tenure of the outgoing Vice President.

The Vice President holds the post for a period of 5 years from the date of taking over his office. However, despite the end of his term, he will remain in office until his successor takes the post.

There is no other way of succession in the Constitution other than the new election in the event of the death of the Vice President, being removed from the post or resigning. However, in such a situation the Deputy Chairman can act as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

The Vice President is not a member of any House of Parliament or any House of the Legislature of any state. If a member of a House of Parliament or any member of a House of the Legislature of a state is elected Vice President, it is understood that his earlier post itself becomes vacant.
