Kolkata . The celebration of democracy was seen in a special way in Darjeeling, West Bengal on Friday morning. Under the SVEEP program of the Election Commission of India, an awareness walkathon was organized here, in which youth and elders participated enthusiastically. According to the Election Commission’s SVEEP ‘X’ handle, “A large number of people gathered at Chowk Bazaar (Chowrasta) on a foggy morning. The program started with the voter’s oath, which was followed by an enthusiastic walkathon. The special thing was that this walkathon was led by senior citizens, while the youth also participated in it with full enthusiasm.” To make people aware, popular cartoon characters ‘Chhota Bheem’ and ‘Chutki’ also participated in the program, which made the atmosphere even more lively. During this time, the message of peaceful and festive elections kept echoing in the hills of Darjeeling. People were appealed that voting is not only their right but also their responsibility.
Let us tell you that Darjeeling is known as ‘Queen of the Hills’. Situated at an altitude of about 2,045 meters in the Eastern Himalayas, this city is famous all over the world for its beauty, famous Darjeeling tea, spectacular views of Mount Kanchenjunga and the UNESCO World Heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Tiger Hill here is known for its amazing views of sunrise, from where one can glimpse Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga. Also, tea gardens like Happy Valley Tea Estate are also the identity of this place.
This time assembly elections in West Bengal will be held in two phases. Voting for the first phase will be held on April 23, while voting for the second phase will be held on April 29. After this, counting of votes will be done on May 4.
Through such awareness programs, the Election Commission aims to motivate more and more people to vote and strengthen democracy.
