Heavy rain likely in western Tamil Nadu and moderate rain across the state

Chennai, June 30 (). According to the Chennai-based Regional Meteorological Center (RMC), moderate rainfall is expected over many parts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, while heavy rainfall is expected over the hilly areas of Coimbatore and parts of the Nilgiris.

The Meteorological Department has said that a ‘trough’ (low pressure area of air) extending from the northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu to Kanyakumari sea is affecting the weather across the state. Due to its effect, there is a possibility of heavy rains with strong winds in the hilly areas of Coimbatore district and some places of Nilgiris.

The RMC has predicted moderate rain with strong winds at a few places in northern Tamil Nadu, while light rain may occur at a few places in the southern districts.

Meteorologists say that the current weather conditions remain favorable for sporadic rains in many parts of the state, which will provide some relief from the heat.

The weather in Chennai is expected to be partly cloudy throughout the day and there may be moderate rain in some areas during evening and night. People have been advised to exercise caution during heavy rains and strong winds, especially in low-lying areas where there is a possibility of waterlogging.

Despite the forecast of rain, heat wave-like conditions persisted in many parts of Tamil Nadu on Monday. Seven weather stations recorded temperatures above 37.7 degrees Celsius, reflecting hot and humid weather across the state.

The highest temperatures were recorded in Cuddalore and Vellore, where the mercury reached 38.9 degrees Celsius. Places like Tiruttani, Nagapattinam and Parangipettai also felt intense heat during the day.

Chennai also experienced scorching heat and the temperature went above 37.8 degrees Celsius on Monday. Meteorological Department officials said that despite the possibility of rain in the evening, the day temperature in the city is expected to remain above this level on Tuesday also.

Meteorologists say this type of weather is common during the south-west monsoon season, when intermittent rains are accompanied by intense heat and humidity during the day.

Although the rains are expected to provide some temporary respite from the heat in many districts, officials have advised people to stay hydrated, avoid exposure to the hot afternoon sun for too long and exercise caution during thunderstorms and strong winds.

RMC has said that it will keep an eye on the changes in the weather and will issue more advisories if the conditions change.

People living in hilly and sensitive areas have been appealed to pay attention to the official weather information and take necessary precautions during heavy rains and strong winds.
