Hindi journalism has been the voice of democracy for 199 years: Manish Purohit

Remembered the glorious history and contribution of journalism on Hindi Journalism Day.

Jodhpur. On the occasion of Hindi Journalism Day, District Vice President of BJP Manish Purohit, remembering the glorious journey of 199 years of Hindi journalism, said that Hindi journalism is continuously playing an important role in the development of society and nation by becoming the most powerful voice of democracy. He told that on May 30, 1826, Pandit Yugal Kishore Shukla had laid the foundation of Hindi journalism by publishing the country’s first Hindi newspaper ‘Udant Martand’ from Calcutta. Hindi Journalism Day is celebrated every year in memory of that historical day.
Played an important role from freedom movement to protection of democracy
Purohit said that Hindi journalism worked for public awareness from the revolution of 1857 till the freedom struggle. Even during the Emergency of 1975, journalism struggled to protect freedom of expression and made an important contribution in strengthening democratic values.
A powerful medium for social change
He said that Hindi journalism has played an important role in social change by raising public awareness against female foeticide, Beti Bachao Abhiyan, Swachh Bharat Mission and by prominently raising the issues of farmers and labourers. Even during the Covid-19 pandemic, journalists risked their lives to deliver authentic and necessary information to the general public.
Government schemes brought to the masses
Manish Purohit said that Hindi media has played an important role in spreading information about public welfare schemes like Ujjwala Yojana, Jan Dhan Yojana and Ayushman Bharat to every village and every home. Media has acted as an effective bridge between the government and the public.
Raised bold voice against corruption
He said that Hindi journalism has ensured accountability by exposing various scams and irregularities from time to time. Journalism has been continuously doing the work of asking difficult questions to those in power and bringing to the fore issues of public interest.
Playing leading role in nation building
Purohit said that Hindi media has kept national interest paramount on various issues ranging from Kargil war to national security. At the same time, journalism has also played an important role in motivating the youth by giving prominence to topics related to new education policy, Startup India and innovation.
While wishing all the journalists on Hindi Journalism Day, he said that the spirit of truth, fairness and public concern is the biggest strength of journalism.
