New Delhi. Amid global supply disruptions due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, India is now increasingly turning to America for the supply of LPG (cooking gas). This information has come to light in a new report. According to the S&P Global report, LPG supplies from the US to India have increased, surpassing the volume coming from the traditional Gulf countries. The report said India’s total weekly LPG imports declined to 2.65 lakh metric tonnes in the week ending March 19, 2026, from 3.22 lakh metric tonnes in the week ending March 5.
According to the report, “Amid concerns over LPG availability, India is taking rapid steps to diversify its LPG supply sources, including imports from the US.”
Before the war, about 60 percent of India’s total LPG consumption came from the Gulf region. However, imports from the Middle East declined to just 89,000 metric tons in the week to March 19, accounting for 34 percent of total imports, the lowest level since January.
At the same time, the supply from alternative sources increased to 1.76 lakh metric tonnes, whereas in the previous week, 100 percent import was coming from the Middle East.
In recent days, reports of long queues and delays regarding LPG shortage have surfaced on social media, raising concerns among people. However, according to an independent analysis, India’s energy system is now stronger and more flexible than before, capable of handling external shocks.
The government has directed oil marketing companies to maintain uninterrupted supply to ensure gas supply to domestic consumers. At the same time, temporary supply management was done in commercial sectors like hotels and restaurants.
Additionally, regulatory measures were also implemented to avoid market panic.
Under Operation Sankalp, the Indian Navy ensured safe movement of merchant vessels in sensitive maritime areas. Also, through diplomatic efforts, LPG tankers were diverted from blocked routes to Indian ports, which has reduced supply concerns to a great extent.
