Udaipur. Disability is a serious social issue today globally. According to the World Health Organization, about 16% of the world’s population is living with some type of disability. In developing countries, when poverty and social prejudice are added to disability, social rituals like marriage become almost impossible for them. Even in India, lakhs of disabled young men and women remain deprived of marital life only due to financial lack, social hesitation and insecurity of future.

Presenting a living example of the solution to this global and national challenge, Narayan Seva Sansthan is organizing the 45th disabled and poor mass marriage ceremony on 14-15 March in the institute’s premises ‘Seva Mahatirtha, Badi’. In which 102 disabled and poor brides and grooms, selected from different states of the country, will enter into family life in the form of 51 couples, taking seven rounds of the sacred fire with Vedic chanting. Among these couples, some are deprived of hands, some of legs, some are blind, and some are hearing-speech impaired. It is noteworthy that many of these brides and grooms have undergone free operations, artificial limbs/assistance devices and skill training in this very institute – and now their marriage is also being solemnized here. It is not only a marriage, but also a celebration of the entire life journey of treatment, rehabilitation, self-reliance, marriage and family.
President of the institute, Prashant Aggarwal said that in the last 21 years, the institute has so far conducted marriages of 2510 disabled young men and women. The institute is determined to provide respect, opportunity and secure future to the disabled, not just pity. Real obstacles in marriage of disabled and their solutions.
Social prejudice, economic deprivation, physical dependence, lack of self-confidence, not finding a suitable life partner and insecurity of household after marriage – these are the main reasons due to which marriages of disabled people stop. The Institute provides comprehensive support to overcome all these barriers:
• Free medical treatment, operations and artificial limbs
• Skill training and livelihood guidance
• Transparent selection of suitable match
• Complete free marriage arrangements
• Providing all the household items after marriage
Newlyweds will be given complete gift of household
On behalf of the institute, the newly married couples are gifted the necessary materials for a strong start of their family life, which includes bed, mattress, pillows, blankets, sheets, cupboard, gas stove, gas cylinder, kitchen set (steel utensils), pressure cooker, tawa, kadhai, plate-glass set, fan, sewing machine, wheelchair/accessories, trolley bag, water tank/bucket, drum and other essentials of daily use. Household items are included. This material helps the newlyweds to start their new life with dignity after marriage.
An example at national and global level
The institute president said that this holistic model of linking the rehabilitation of disabled people with marriage and self-reliant family life is rare in the world. Donors, social workers and researchers from India and abroad have been joining the institute to understand this model. This initiative is not a pity-charity towards the disabled, but a strong example of connecting them with a dignified family life.
The two-day event will conclude with Vedic tradition, chanting of mantras, bhajan-kirtan and cultural dignity. Guests from India and abroad, saints, social workers, public representatives and donors will be present; Many will themselves give blessings to the newlyweds by doing Kanyadaan. This event will infuse new hope into the lives of 51 families and will give a message to the society that true humanity survives only through service, compassion and dedication.
