Washington. New information has come to light in the firing case during the reporters’ dinner at the Washington Hilton Hotel located near the White House. US officials said the gunman had a shotgun, a handgun and several knives. The attacker ran towards a Secret Service checkpoint near the Washington Hilton, but was subdued by law enforcement officers. Washington’s interim Police Chief Jeff Carroll said the suspect was heavily armed when he tried to break through security. “He had a shotgun, a handgun and several knives when he ran through that checkpoint,” Carroll told reporters. The incident took place at around 8:36 pm in the lobby of the hotel, where security was done at multiple levels for the high profile event of President Trump and senior officials.
Law enforcement personnel immediately detained the suspect. There was also a shootout between the officers and the suspect. During this, a Secret Service officer was shot, but he survived because of his bulletproof jacket. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment and is currently in good condition. The suspect was not shot, but he was also taken to the hospital for examination.
Officials said the suspect could not reach the ballroom, where thousands of people were present. “This checkpoint worked,” said U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, adding that multiple layers of security prevented a major attack. Pirro said it was clear this individual came with the intent to cause as much damage and destruction as possible.
“The suspect is being charged with two counts of use of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and two counts of assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon,” Pirro said, adding that the charges could be upgraded as the investigation progresses.
Officials said the suspect was caught and subdued at the scene, and was knocked down and handcuffed. There is no threat to the public at present. Investigators believe the suspect was acting alone, Carroll said.
Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser also said, “At this time we have no reason to believe anyone else was involved.”
Authorities have now launched an investigation into how the suspect got inside the hotel with multiple weapons. Jeff Carroll said CCTV footage is being examined and a search operation is underway. He also said that a room belonging to the suspect has been secured in the hotel.
The FBI has added its Joint Terrorism Task Force and Evidence teams to the investigation. Assistant Director Darren Cox said that all possible aspects are being investigated and no aspect will be left out in this investigation.
He also praised the swift action of law enforcement and said the public should be proud of the promptness and courage of the officers.
Secret Service Director Sean Kern said a multi-layered security system stopped the attacker. Officials said the investigation is still in its initial stages and forensic investigation, questioning of witnesses and background check of the suspect are ongoing.
No motive has been confirmed at this time and it is not clear whether the President was directly targeted. Officials said that investigation into all these questions is ongoing. Additional charges are expected to be filed as the investigation progresses and the accused will be arraigned in federal court in the coming days.
