Chandigarh. The District Bar Association (DBA), Chandigarh, in its emergency meeting, has taken a major decision and decided not to work on the state level call on 5th and 6th February (Thursday and Friday). After this decision, the lawyer community is unitedly opposing the current judicial policies. Main reasons for the protest: The Executive Committee has clarified that this movement is primarily in protest against two major policies which they consider detrimental to the lawyer community:
Action Plan for Subordinate Courts: There is resentment among lawyers over the new ‘Action Plan’ being implemented for disposal of cases in courts.
Legal Aid Defense Council (LADC) system: Lawyers believe that this system is adversely affecting their professional future, dignity and independence.
appeal for unity
The Executive Committee of DBA Chandigarh has requested all the advocates to stay away from court work to make this two-day strike a success. The committee argues that these policies not only violate the rights of lawyers, but may also hamper the independence of the justice system in the long run.
impact on general public
Due to two consecutive days (Thursday and Friday) being ‘No Work Day’:
Hearing of thousands of cases listed in the district court will be postponed.
People coming for court work will have to wait for the new dates.
Due to Saturday and Sunday being holidays, now the regular work in the courts will start functioning smoothly from Monday itself.
