Srinagar . One person was killed and two others injured in a steam boiler explosion in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district. Police officials said that late on Wednesday evening, an explosion occurred in a cold storage unit in the Phal Mandi area of Aglar in South Kashmir’s Shopian district. One engineer died and two others were injured during repair work. The incident occurred at the Jum Jum Cold Store, when a steamer exploded during repairs. The injured were taken to the district hospital for treatment, where one of them died, while two others are undergoing treatment. The deceased has been identified as Saurabh Singh, while the injured have been identified as Dilip Kumar and Ram Kumar.
All three are residents of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. Steam boilers are used for heating, pressure control or maintenance functions within the plant.
It works under high pressure and temperatures and any malfunction during repair or operation can cause an explosion, making it a high-risk component if not handled properly. The three workers were doing repair work at the cold storage facility when the explosion occurred.
A cold store is a temperature-controlled unit used to preserve fruits, vegetables and other agricultural products by slowing the spoilage process and extending their shelf life.
To maintain a steady supply of fruits, especially apples, in the national markets, several cold storage units have been set up in the districts of South Kashmir, in which ripe fruits are stored so that they can be sent to markets outside the valley in case of shortage of apples.
The practice of keeping the apple crop in cold storage also prevents glut in the markets due to the arrival of large quantities of fruit in the autumn months. The glut naturally leads to a decline in prices and growers often complain of low profits due to an overabundance of fruits in the markets.
