New Delhi/Srikakulam. President Draupadi Murmu and Vice President CP Radhakrishnan have expressed grief over the stampede incident at Venkateswara Swamy temple. At least nine devotees, mostly women and children, were killed in a stampede during Ekadashi celebrations at the Venkateswara Swamy temple in Kasibugga in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district on Saturday. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident and announced compensation for the victims. The Prime Minister said, “I am saddened by the stampede at the Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured get speedy recovery.”
PMO informed through a post on ‘X’ that the Prime Minister also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50 thousand to the injured from the National Relief Fund.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Health Minister JP Nadda also described the incident as ‘extremely sad’.
Expressing his condolences, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said, “I am deeply shocked by the stampede at the Venkateshwara temple at Kasibugga in Srikakulam district. The loss of lives of devotees in this incident is extremely saddening. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I have directed the authorities to ensure prompt and proper treatment of the injured.”
The Chief Minister also directed local officials and public representatives to visit the incident site and personally monitor the relief and rescue operations.
