According to the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC), many districts of Tamil Nadu may receive heavy rains on Monday under the influence of a low pressure area over the Karnataka coast and adjoining coastal Andhra Pradesh. The weather department has predicted light to moderate rain with thunderstorm at one or two places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during the day. The impact of this weather system is expected to cause particularly severe heat in parts of western and southern Tamil Nadu.
Heavy rain with thunderstorms and strong winds with speed reaching 40 to 50 kmph are likely at isolated places over Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Kanyakumari, Erode and Salem districts. Similar weather is expected in the hilly areas of Coimbatore, Tenkasi and Tirunelveli districts.
Meteorologists say that rain may provide some relief from the current heat, although the day temperature is expected to remain around normal levels for the next few days. The Meteorological Department has indicated that there is no possibility of any significant change in the maximum temperatures in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal between June 8 and 11. However, the temperature may gradually drop as rainfall increases.
Meanwhile, maximum temperatures are expected to be normal or slightly above normal in most parts of the region. Despite the possibility of rain, weather officials have warned that heat-related discomfort may persist in some areas, especially the northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, due to the combined effect of high temperatures and high humidity.
Chennai and its suburbs are likely to have partly cloudy skies throughout the day. There is a possibility of light to moderate rain in the city, along with thunderstorms at isolated places. The weather may become unstable during the afternoon and evening, with the possibility of brief but intense rain in some areas.
The maximum temperature in Chennai is likely to be around 39 to 40 and the minimum temperature will be around 29 to 30 degrees Celsius. People have been advised to take precautions to avoid heat stress and be alert to the possibility of sudden thunderstorms. The Meteorological Department has urged the public to remain aware of official weather advisories, as rainfall patterns may vary in different districts depending on local atmospheric conditions.
