The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, has approved the proposal to appoint 19 lawyers and judicial officers as judges in the Madras High Court. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Supreme Court Collegium said that in its meeting held on May 18, it approved the resolution dated November 4, 2025, in which six judicial officers were recommended for appointment as judges of the Madras High Court. These include Dr. P. Murugan, M.D. Sumati, S. Alli, C. Thirumagal Chandrasekhar, Dharmalingam Lingeswaran and Karthikeyan Balathandayutham. The statement said that the Supreme Court Collegium, in its meeting held on May 18, has approved the proposal to appoint a judge of Madras High Court. Apart from this, the collegium also approved the proposal dated November 21, 2025, in which six lawyers, Natarajan Ramesh, G.K. Muthukumar, Ramakrishnan Rajesh Vivekananthan, Shankaranarayanan Ravikumar, Nagarajan Dilip Kumar and Elappan Manoharan were recommended as judges of the Madras High Court.
In another resolution dated December 7, 2025, the collegium appointed lawyers Krishnaswamy Govindarajan, Rajneesh Pathiyal, K. Approved the names of Appadurai alias Kandavel Appadurai and Ramasamy Anita as judges on the bench of Madras High Court. The collegium also approved the resolution dated December 10, 2025, in which judicial officers Shanmugam Karthikeyan, Baluchamy Murugesan and N. Gunasekharan was recommended to be made a judge of Madras High Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium is headed by the Chief Justice of India and consists of the senior-most judges of the Supreme Court. According to the rules related to the appointment of High Court judges, the Chief Justice of the concerned High Court sends a proposal of names after consulting his two senior-most judges. After this this recommendation is sent to the Chief Minister, who sends it to the Governor. Then the Governor sends this proposal along with necessary documents and information to the Union Law and Justice Minister. After this the Central Government completes the process on this proposal and it is sent to the Chief Justice of India.
The Chief Justice decides the final recommendation after consulting the senior-most judges of the Supreme Court. After the approval of the collegium, the recommendation is sent to the Central Government. Appointments become effective once the President signs the letter of appointment and the Department of Justice issues a notification in the Gazette. –
