Iran has completely tightened its control over the Strait of Hormuz and has clearly stated that no ship will pass through there without its permission. Iran has taken this step after the attacks by America and Israel in February 2026. Now only those ships which Iran has considered safe are being allowed to pass through here. This new system is having a major impact on global maritime trade and supply chains.
ℹ: Four countries came forward to mediate between America and Iran, proposal for direct talks in Pakistan.
What are Iran’s new terms and conditions for ships?
Iran has informed the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that now only non-aggressive ships will be able to pass through this route. This means that only ships from countries that are not involved in any military action against Iran will be allowed. No ship or property belonging to America and Israel will be allowed to leave from here. Now all the ships passing through there have to follow the prescribed routes near the Iranian coast and have to remain in constant contact with the Iranian authorities.
Tax and which countries have got relief?
Iran is preparing to introduce a new law under which every ship passing through there will have to share its complete information. Along with this, each ship may have to pay a tax of about 20 lakh dollars (about Rs 16.5 crore). This fee will have to be paid in yuan or cryptocurrency. It is a matter of relief that Iran has allowed countries like India, China, Russia and Japan to pass through. Recently some gas tankers of India have been safely evacuated through this route.

America’s stance and impact on Saudi Arabia
Regarding this situation, America has warned that if this route is not opened for trade immediately, it can target Iranian oil wells and power plants. At present, there are reports of talks between America and Iran. On the other hand, this is a matter of great concern for Saudi Arabia because its oil exports and food supplies depend on this route. Spain has been given a free pass on this route because it refused to allow the US to use its military bases.
