Bhilwara. This incident that came to light from Mandalgarh in Bhilwara is not just the news of a crime, but is such a scary picture of the digital disorientation of the modern era that the soul shudders. A mother, who is considered to be the biggest shield of protection for the child, abandoned her love and became death. The root of this entire tragedy was not any old rivalry or enmity, but the half-baked knowledge and confusion of ‘social media’, which filled a healthy mind with the fear of death. Sanju Devi, who herself used to make happy videos with her children on Instagram, got so lost in the world of Reels that she accepted a simple sign seen on the mobile screen as her ultimate reality. Mistaking the mouth ulcers for cancer, she got so scared that she was convinced of her death. But ironically, more than the fear of his own death, he was more worried about what would happen to his innocent children after his departure. Due to this ‘confused motherly love’, she took a dreadful decision – to take the children along. That morning of 11 January became an unforgettable dark day for Manpura village. Sanju first strangled his 12-year-old daughter Neha, and then repeated the same cruelty with his 7-year-old son Bhairu. When he was no longer satisfied with even this, he attacked their soft bodies with iron nails used for pitching tents until their last breaths subsided. What she said to her husband on the phone after the murder can shake any stone-hearted person – “I have killed both the children, now I am also leaving.”
When the neighbors entered the house through the roof, the scene there was like a nightmare. Dead bodies of innocent people were lying soaked in blood and nearby was unconscious the mother who had destroyed her own world. Police investigation revealed that there was no medical confirmation as to whether Sanju had cancer or not. All this was just a ‘virtual fear’ which he accepted as true after watching the reel.
This incident is screamingly warning us about how mentally weak the ‘reels’ and ‘algorithms’ of social media are making us. We take the information seen on the screen as God, but forget to talk to our loved ones and seek doctor’s advice. Sanju Devi’s case is a strong lesson for the society that if we do not recognize the line between technology and reality, similar digital diseases will continue to consume our future generations. Today there is only silence in that house of Bhilwara, which is asking the question, what was the fault of those innocent people?
