You must have heard about many airports around the world, each one has its own specialty. But have you ever heard of an airport which does not have a runway, yet planes take off from there? In fact, there is an airport on the Scottish island Barra which is unique in itself. Its name is Barra Beach Airport, also known as Barra Airport. This airport is more than 80 years old, yet it does not have a runway.
This airport situated on the banks of the North Atlantic Ocean is the first airport in the world which does not have a runway. The plane lands on the beach. During high tide, a formal warning is issued for planes not to land. It is worth noting that Bara is the only airport in the world where scheduled flights land.
This airport is also connected to Glasgow Airport. When a storm arrives, the airport is closed and all flights are canceled when warning is received. Bara Airport is mostly for small planes. Two Scottish Airlines flights arrive and depart here every day.
There is no runway here, and the plane lands on sand. Landing times are changed at high tide. Apart from this, a small building named Terminal has been built on the beach. There is no bridge or road connecting the plane to the terminal.
