Imphal, May 13 (IANS). An incident of ambush came to light in Noni district of Manipur on Wednesday evening. The attack came hours after another attack in Kangpokpi district.
A police officer said a couple belonging to the Chiru Naga community were returning home in a car from Imphal. Meanwhile, unknown armed assailants opened fire on his vehicle near Jaujangtek area of Khaupum police station area.
Wilson Thanga, a resident of Dolang Chiru village, died in the attack, while his wife was seriously injured.
According to sources, the couple was earlier taking shelter in Nungsai Khunthak area of Khaupum police station area of Noni district.
This latest incident came hours after another attack in Kangpokpi district on Wednesday, again raising concerns over the security situation in the hill districts of Manipur.
As soon as information about the attack was received, security forces reached the spot. However, no official statement has been issued so far regarding the identity of the attackers or the circumstances of the incident. Investigation of the matter is ongoing.
According to an Imphal police officer, two vehicles were ambushed by unidentified armed men on Tiger Road in the hilly area of Kangpokpi district on Wednesday morning. In this attack, three people died on the spot, while four others were injured.
The deceased, all from the Kuki community, were traveling in vehicles when armed assailants opened fire on them.
Kuki Students Organization said that all the deceased were leaders associated with the Baptist Church of the Kuki community. Kuki INPI Manipur, one of the leading organizations of the Kuki community, has called for a three-day complete bandh in all Kuki-dominated areas of the state in protest against the killing of three Baptist Church leaders in Kangpokpi district.
Janghaolun Haokip, Information and Publicity Secretary of Kuki Inpi Manipur, strongly condemned the killing. The organization described the attack as barbaric, in which five other people were also injured.
