Caracas. National Assembly Speaker Jorge Rodriguez said the death toll from the June 24 earthquake in Venezuela has risen to 5,069. Rodriguez released an official update on Telegram on Friday, according to which the number of injured remained at 16,740, while 6,462 people had been rescued. The update said that 21,235 people are living in 107 temporary camps built in the Venezuelan capital Caracas and the central states of La Guaira, Miranda and Aragua.
Authorities have recorded 1,331 aftershocks since the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck more than three weeks ago.
Earlier, Rodriguez had said that 94 temporary camps had been set up so far. He said the coastal state of La Guaira was hit the hardest by the two earthquakes. There are 10,981 people in shelters in La Guaira, while there are 6,133 in Caracas and 1,323 in the central state of Miranda.
Earlier, Venezuela’s acting President Delsey Rodriguez had expressed her gratitude for the humanitarian assistance provided by 28 countries to help the people affected by the recent earthquake in the country.
He spoke after inspecting a collection center in Caracas, where more than 2,000 tons of international aid was being organized for distribution to temporary camps built for people affected by the June 24 earthquake.
“Venezuela thanks again and again the countries, the peoples of the world and the governments of the world that have extended a helping hand,” Rodriguez said.
He added, “Each country will be able to see how its aid is being used, so that the Venezuelan people can feel that country’s friendly assistance.”
Rodriguez said the international response to the tragedy lets Venezuelans know they are not alone. “The most important thing is to look to the future and see how we will recover and rebuild the affected areas.”
