Kolkata, July 1 (). A special CBI court in Kolkata on Wednesday framed charges against 19 accused in the murder case of BJP worker Abhijeet Sarkar.
Abhijit Sarkar was murdered during the violence following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. The accused also include former Trinamool Congress MLA Paresh Paul and former Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) councilor Swapan Samaddar.
In this case, CBI officials had interrogated the former MLA and former councilor several times.
BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar of Kankurgachi area of North Kolkata was brutally murdered, allegedly by Trinamool Congress workers, after the results of the 2021 assembly elections were declared. The family alleges that he was severely tortured and killed.
Based on the family’s complaint, Narkeldanga police station started a preliminary investigation. Police also filed a charge sheet against 15 people.
Later, on the orders of Calcutta High Court, CBI took over the investigation of the case. CBI filed a supplementary charge sheet and made a total of 20 people accused. The then in-charge of Kankurgachi police station and a woman sub-inspector were also arrested in this case.
During his bail hearing, the court raised the question that how will the society run if the guards start playing the role of murderers. The family members of the slain BJP worker expressed displeasure over the speed of CBI investigation in this case.
After the recently held West Bengal Assembly elections, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that not a single person involved in any case related to post-poll violence in 2021 will be spared.
