Bengaluru. A 22-year-old youth died in a tragic accident after his head got stuck in the service lift at a hotel in Jayanagar area of Bengaluru on Thursday morning. The deceased has been identified as Rajesh, a resident of Dharwad. The incident took place around 9 am in the Jayanagar police station area. According to the police, Rajesh died due to serious head injury. The incident happened when he was in the lift and the lift was running between the first and second floors of the building. During this time his neck and head got stuck in the lift.
Initial investigation revealed that the lift in which the accident took place was an old service lift which had an iron grill and no doors for safety. Police said the lift could be operated even when the grill was open and was mainly used by hotel staff to carry sacks filled with vegetables and other items.
The investigators suspect that Rajesh went into the service lift and for some reason, which is yet to be known, he stuck his head out of the grill or bent it while the lift was moving. As the lift went up from the first floor to the second floor, his head hit the concrete beam between the two floors. The lift continued upward, causing serious injuries.
Police said that Rajesh died on the spot due to the collision. As soon as information about the incident was received, policemen reached the hotel and conducted initial investigation.
Officials said no evidence of foul play has been found so far and the death appears to be an accident.
Officials are also trying to find out why Rajesh had come to the hotel, because what connection he had with the hotel is not clear yet. Police have contacted his family members in Dharwad and are waiting for their arrival.
A case has been registered at Jaynagar police station and further investigation is underway. The incident has once again raised concerns over the use of old lifts and lack of safety measures in commercial establishments across the city.
In the first week of July, a 15-year-old boy was crushed to death in a hydraulic material lift at a hardware store on Tannery Road in Bengaluru. The victim was brought to the city from Mumbai for school holidays, but the shop owners allegedly made him do dangerous work like lifting heavy paint cans instead of promising to teach him computer skills.
In May, a 28-year-old employee working at an Instamart facility in Mangaluru’s Kuntikkan area died after a lift malfunctioned.
