On Monday, fuel prices in India were increased for the fourth time in just ten days. Petrol prices were increased by ₹2.61 per litre, while diesel prices were increased by ₹2.71. Government oil marketing companies are increasing prices in installments to compensate for their ongoing losses.

With this latest hike, the retail price of petrol in Delhi has increased to ₹102.12 per litre, while diesel now stands at ₹95.20. Similarly, petrol prices in Kolkata have increased to ₹113.51 per litre, and diesel at ₹99.82. In Mumbai, petrol prices have increased to ₹111.21 per litre, while diesel has reached ₹97.83. In Chennai, petrol is selling at ₹107.77 and diesel at ₹99.55. In Delhi, petrol prices have now crossed the ₹100 mark. In many other big cities, it is touching the figure of ₹110 or more. In Bengaluru and Hyderabad, prices have crossed ₹110 and ₹115 per liter respectively.

**What is the government saying?**
Meanwhile, the central government has said that there is no shortage of fuel in the country and India has enough reserves to deal with the current global crisis. Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had said that if retail prices are not changed from time to time, oil marketing companies may suffer huge losses due to prolonged increase in crude oil prices.

In recent times, CNG prices have also been increased across the country. In the month of May alone – over a period of just 11 to 12 days – the price of CNG was increased by ₹6 per kg. However, even after the recent price hike, CNG remains cheaper than petrol and diesel. In Delhi, CNG is cheaper than petrol by about ₹19. In Delhi, petrol is priced at ₹102.12 per litre, while CNG is priced at ₹83.09 per kg. The direct difference in prices is ₹19.03. The situation is similar in the case of diesel; The price difference between the two is around ₹12.
