Gig workers associated with big online shopping and delivery platforms like Amazon, Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit, Flipkart and Zepto have announced a nationwide strike from December 31, 2025. The gig workers who are already on strike since December 25 are also continuing their protest with the same demands. Gig workers say that the purpose of the strike is to put pressure on the companies, because their working conditions are worsening, while the profits of the companies are continuously increasing.
gig workers strike
The strike is being organized under the banner of Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union and Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers. The unions claim that a large number of gig workers, not only from major metros but also from tier-II cities, will participate, which could lead to massive disruption in delivery services. According to union leaders, while the demand for fast and timely delivery is continuously increasing, workers are neither getting fair wages nor safe and dignified working conditions.
The biggest concern of gig workers is the app-based control system. He says payments, delivery targets and incentives are decided entirely by algorithms, with almost no transparency. According to workers, they bear the entire risk of delivery, while deadlines are very strict. Moreover, frequent changes in incentive structure make their income unstable and uncertain, seriously impacting their financial security.
Protest against working conditions and wages
The union statement said delivery workers are the backbone of these platforms, especially during weekends, peak hours and festivals, yet they face problems like long working hours, unsafe delivery deadlines and continuously declining earnings. Gig workers say their protest will continue until their demands regarding working conditions, wages and social security are seriously considered.
