New GST rates have been implemented in the country from today. While everyday items like milk, ghee, cheese, butter, oil and shampoo have become cheaper, the prices of TV, AC, refrigerator, car and bike have also reduced. However, there are some things on which the government has increased tax, that is, they have become more expensive. Indeed, luxury and harmful products are placed in the category of sin goods and they have a high GST of 40%. These include cold drinks to cigarettes, tobacco and luxury cars.
Sin items become more expensive as soon as they reach a slab of 40%
After the announcement of GST reform by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, the new GST rates have now come into force from the first day of Navratri, 22 September 2025. The government has reduced the number of GST slabs to two, eliminating the 12-28% slab. All the items included in these slabs have been placed in categories of 5% and 18%, which has reduced the prices of most of these items. Meanwhile, harmful items and services to the public are placed in a separate slab of 40%. Many of these have increased from 28% to 40% and have become even more expensive from today.

This list also includes activities that can cause financial damage, such as gambling, betting and other gaming services. These will now apply a high GST rate of 40%. Apart from all the items mentioned above, the government has given a big blow to cricket lovers (especially IPL fans). In fact, watching IPL matches has also become expensive and now it has been included in 40 percent GST slab instead of 28 percent GST applicable on tickets. Coal, lignite and peat (organic matter) are also placed in this category, which have become expensive.
