Indian stock markets closed with marginal gains on Thursday, April 2, 2026. Amid volatile trading, Nifty finally closed above 22,700 level. The BSE Sensex closed at 73,319.55, up 185.23 points (or 0.25 per cent), while the Nifty closed at 22,713.10, up 33.70 points (or 0.15 per cent). The market witnessed growth across all sectors; A total of 2,548 shares advanced, 1,505 declined and 147 shares remained unchanged.

IT sector led the rise
Midcap and smallcap stocks showed signs of weakness. The Nifty Midcap index closed 0.3 per cent lower, while the Smallcap index fell 0.4 per cent. On a sectoral basis, the IT sector recorded the strongest growth, rising 2.6 per cent. An increase of 1 percent was recorded in the realty index. In contrast, the Auto, PSU Bank, Oil & Gas, Pharma and Consumer Durables sectors declined by around 1 per cent each.

Sensex hits intraday low
In early trade, the 30-share BSE Sensex fell 1,588.51 points, and briefly touched an intraday low of 71,545.81. However, there was a strong recovery in the market after this, and Sensex recovered all its losses and closed the trade with gains. Similarly, the 50-share NSE Nifty also fell 496.85 points (or 2.19 per cent) in early trade, hitting a low of 22,182.55. However, after this a rapid recovery was seen in this sector also.

A weak trend was seen in global markets. Most Asian markets closed with losses on Thursday. South Korea’s KOSPI fell 4.47 percent, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 declined 2.40 percent. Besides, China’s Shanghai SSE Composite slipped 0.74 per cent, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 0.70 per cent. European markets also remained under pressure; Germany’s DAX fell 1.32 percent, while Paris’s CAC 40 dropped 0.80 percent. Meanwhile, London’s FTSE 100 traded almost flat. In contrast, US stock markets closed strongly on Wednesday.
