The prices of commercial LPG cylinders have been changed across the country, but the prices of domestic use cylinders remain the same. The price of a 19 kg commercial cylinder in the country has increased to ₹3,071.50 since May 1 – an increase of ₹993. Similarly, the price of 5 kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinder has also been increased by ₹261 per cylinder, which is effective immediately.
However, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) said in a press release that there has been no change in the prices of domestic LPG cylinders. This is the third change in the prices of commercial LPG cylinders since the conflict began in Iran on February 28. The first hike – of around ₹115 – took place in early March, followed by an increase of around ₹200 on April 1.
Why do prices vary by location?
There are several reasons why LPG cylinder prices vary from city to city, including transportation costs and distribution margins. Even though there is a uniform GST (Goods and Services Tax) rate on domestic LPG across the country, differences in prices still persist. The cost of transporting gas from the bottling plant to your city and then to your home varies depending on the distance covered. This is why gas prices are often lower in cities near ports like Mumbai – while they are higher in remote or hilly areas.
Additionally, there may be differences in the operating costs and profit margins of gas dealers in different cities, which may lead to slight differences – by a few rupees – in the final price of a gas cylinder. Also, even though the GST rate on gas cylinders is fixed at 5 percent, prices may fluctuate due to minor changes in local duties or VAT (value added tax).
