On Friday, the government announced a cut in excise duty on petrol and diesel. However, the common man will not benefit from this move. As a result, today—March 28, 2026—once again there is no change in the prices of petrol and diesel. It is worth noting that on Thursday, the central government reduced the excise duty on petrol to ₹3 from ₹13, and the excise duty on diesel—which was earlier fixed at ₹10—to zero.

On Wednesday, Nara Energy increased the prices of petrol and diesel across the country. The oil company increased the price of petrol by ₹5.30 per liter and diesel by ₹3 per litre. The company has passed the burden of rising costs on to its customers.
Increase in export tax
The government has imposed export duty (windfall tax) of ₹21.50 per liter on export of diesel and ₹29.50 per liter on aviation turbine fuel (ATF). This tax (windfall tax) was first imposed in July 2022 to curb ‘windfall profits’ of refinery companies after the Russia-Ukraine war, and was later lifted in December 2024. Crude oil prices are skyrocketing due to the war. Crude oil, which was around $70 per barrel last month, has now crossed the $110 per barrel mark. As a result, huge pressure has increased on oil companies.
