UGC: The University Grants Commission (UGC) may soon do away with the requirement of PhD for teaching in a central university. UGC is planning to create new posts under this, in which PhD will not be mandatory for teaching in universities.
According to media reports, the UGC will allow experience and people working in the relevant field to share their experience with the students. The posts of Professor of Practice and Associate Professor of Practice are likely to be created in the new posts.
The University Grants Commission has not clarified whether the newly created posts will be permanent or temporary. The UGC may soon constitute a committee to make this rule and an official announcement in this regard is likely to be made soon.
However, no official announcement has been made by the UGC in this regard yet. If this happens, then those candidates will get an opportunity to teach in universities, who are knowledgeable in the relevant subject, but do not have a PhD degree.
According to UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar, it was decided that special posts would be created. There will be no PhD requirement for these posts.
According to the Union Ministry of Education, more than 10,000 teachers’ posts were vacant in centrally funded institutions as of December 2021.
