World Youth Skills Day: World Youth Skills Day is celebrated every year on 15 July. The objective of this day is to highlight the importance of empowering youth with technical, vocational and digital skills, so that they can successfully face the challenges of the changing global job market. The United Nations (UN) started it in the year 2014. This day gives a message to governments, educational institutions and industries to increase investment in the skill development of youth.
According to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, large-scale investment in inclusive and quality education and training is necessary to fully develop the potential of youth. This will pave the way for new employment opportunities and sustainable livelihood.
Theme of World Youth Skills Day 2026
This year the theme of World Youth Skills Day 2026 has been kept “Skills for a Shared Future”. This theme emphasizes on providing youth with skills that will enable them to adapt to a rapidly changing world, embrace innovation, lead with empathy and better coordinate across cultural diversities.
According to the United Nations, this year’s programs will focus on innovative skills development programs that prepare youth to actively participate in building a more inclusive, sustainable and better future.
History of World Youth Skills Day
The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on 18 December 2014 declaring 15 July as World Youth Skills Day. Its objective was to provide the youth with the necessary skills for employment, respectable work and entrepreneurship. This initiative was led by Sri Lanka, which received widespread support from the G77 countries.
Importance of World Youth Skills Day
This day strengthens the objective of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG-4) i.e. inclusive and quality education for all. Experts believe that 84 lakh (8.4 million) new jobs can be created for the youth by the year 2030 through investment in green and blue economy. In such a situation, skill development is not only a medium of employment but also the foundation stone of a self-reliant and prosperous society.
