West Bengal Assembly Parties Independents Representation: West Bengal elections have added some color to the state assembly. During the 15-year rule of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC), the scope of political parties and independents in the Assembly was continuously shrinking. In the 2021 elections, MLAs from only 4 parties including Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were able to reach the House after winning. The independents were wiped out. This time also we have not been able to win. When Mamata first came to power in 2011, there were 10 parties and independents among the 294 MLAs. There was a lot of political color in the house. With the victory of BJP in this election, MLAs from 6 parties have reached the House. Even though only a few MLAs from Congress and CPM have won, there will now be someone to raise the voice of the party in the House.
Mamta’s journey of one and a half decade of running the government exploded after TMC reached its best performance. Like a game of snakes and ladders, from 215 to 80 in just 5 years. Since 2011, Mamata had been continuously forming the next government by winning more seats. Mamta had got 184 seats in 2011, 211 seats in 2016 and 215 seats in 2021. In 1972, for the first time in Bengal, Congress got 216 MLAs in the elections of 294 seats. Since then till date no party including CPM has won 215 seats.
2/3rd majority from 3 MLAs; 46 years of waiting; How did Modi-Shah bring BJP government in Bengal in just 10 years?
BJP has got two-third majority in this election with 207 seats, but it is less than TMC’s victory in 2016 and 2021. It is true that with the victory of BJP, some color has returned in the assembly. Read below the account of how many parties or independents and how many MLAs of which party have won in the assembly elections since the formation of TMC in 1998.
