Goalpara, June 22 (IANS). 19 new cases of dengue have been reported in Goalpara, Assam. Cups used to collect milk from rubber trees have been found to be prime breeding grounds for mosquitoes. An awareness campaign has been started to stop its spread.
District Malaria Office official Tarali Thakuria told IANS, “Earlier there were no dengue cases at the local level in Goalpara. Dengue patients have increased here in the last three years. In 2024, 104 dengue cases were reported.
During investigation, dengue larvae were found in the water filled in cups used to collect milk from rubber trees. Due to this, tribal people dependent on rubber industry became victims of dengue. “This year, 96 dengue cases have been found in rubber farming areas.”
Tarali Thakuria said that continuous campaigns are being run to make people aware in the areas where dengue patients are being found. Rubber farmers are also being made aware about prevention from dengue. We are telling farmers to change the water in the cups used to collect milk from rubber trees every week, so that the larvae do not flourish.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dengue is a viral infection caused by dengue virus and spread to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Nearly half the world’s population is at risk from dengue.
Dengue is found in tropical and sub-tropical areas worldwide, especially in urban and semi-urban areas. Prevention and control of dengue depends on vector control (controlling mosquitoes). There is no specific cure for dengue or severe dengue, but early detection and proper medical care significantly reduces the death rate from severe dengue.
