New Delhi, March 19 (IANS). Nowadays, people’s screen time has increased more than their physical routine. Because of this habit, people are suffering from many health related diseases. In such a situation, instead of wasting your time on any gadget, starting the day with a few moments of calm breathing exercise will help in improving your mental and physical health.
One of these simple and effective pranayama is Bhramari, which is called ‘humming be breathing’ in English. This exercise calms the mind in just a few minutes and gives positive energy for the whole day.
Bhramari Pranayama is named after the black bee found in India, also known as Bhanwara. In this pranayam, while exhaling, a resonating sound like a whirlpool is made, hence it is called Bhramari.
This pranayam is found in the pranayams of ‘Ashta Kumbhaka’. Ashta Kumbhaka means eight special and advanced methods of Pranayam. Their description is found in the ancient yoga text Hatha Yoga Pradipika. The main objective of all these pranayams is to awaken the subtle energy of the body and increase the ability to breathe.
The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, states that the practice of Bhramari Pranayama is not only beneficial for people suffering from mental problems but is also necessary for better health for small children and elders.
According to the ministry, the word ‘Bhramari’ is derived from ‘Bhramar’. The sound produced in this pranayam is like the hum of a bee, hence it is called Bhramari Pranayam. This calming pranayama is extremely effective in reducing stress, anxiety, anger and mental hyperactivity.
Experts say that the resonant effect of the whirlwind-like sound affects the brain and nervous system. It can prove useful in relieving stress related disorders like insomnia, high blood pressure and stress. Regular practice improves concentration and provides excellent preparation for beginning meditation.
