New Delhi, May 21 (IANS). Increasing heat and heat waves in many parts of the country have become a big challenge for people’s health. Dr. Neeraj Nischal, Professor of the Department of Medicine, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, gave detailed information on the health problems caused by heat and their prevention.
Dr. Neeraj Nischal while talking to IANS said that when the heat increases, the first problem that arises is dehydration. This is the mildest condition, in which there is a deficiency of water and salt in the body. If care is not taken in time, it can turn into heat stroke, in which the person may even become unconscious.
He told many important precautions for safety. According to the doctor, one should completely avoid going out from 11 pm to 4-5 pm when the temperature is the highest. If it is necessary to go out, wear loose clothes with full sleeves, full pants and cover your head with a cap, gamcha or turban. The best option is to use an umbrella or stay indoors.
He said that one must drink 1-2 liters of water before leaving the house. Also keep consuming electrolytes or ORS throughout the day. Drinking just plain water is not enough, because salt also comes out of the body with sweat. For this reason, ORS solution or electrolyte drinks are very beneficial in maintaining the balance of the body.
According to Dr. Neeraj Nischal, culturally acceptable beverages like bel ka sharbat, shikanji, dal water etc. are also better options in summer. These not only maintain hydration but also provide coolness to the stomach. At present, complaints like dehydration, weakness, dizziness, headache, excessive sweating, vomiting and falling blood pressure are common among patients coming to hospitals.
He said that in severe cases, heat stroke is being seen, in which the body temperature increases, high fever, fainting, confusion and sometimes even seizures can occur. The elderly, small children, pregnant women and people already suffering from diabetes, heart disease or other diseases are at greatest risk. Eat light and nutritious food during the summer season, stay in the shade as much as possible and immediately pay attention to the body’s signals. By taking timely precautions, serious health problems can be avoided.
