New Delhi, February 8 (IANS). The home kitchen that provides food for us is full of medicinal properties, and very few people know that every spice used in the kitchen works like a medicine.
One such spice is dry ginger, which has been used for centuries in everything from tea to laddus. Simple looking dry ginger is a medicine in itself. In Ayurveda, dry ginger has been used to get rid of many types of diseases.
Dry ginger is the dried form of ginger which is prepared by drying it and then grinding it finely. Countless benefits of dry ginger have been described in ‘Charak Samhita’. According to Ayurveda, dry ginger balances the gastric fire, improves digestion, keeps the body warm from within, relieves constipation and also helps in balancing the Kapha-Vata doshas, however, it is also important to know about the methods of its consumption.
Powerful elements like gingerol and ‘shogol’ are found in dry ginger, which are used in diseases like joint pain and arthritis and cancer, apart from stomach related diseases. Dry ginger should be consumed in small quantities during spring or late winter because in such seasons, infections spread rapidly and problems related to fever and cold trouble everyone from children to the elderly. If there is a problem of loss of appetite then dry ginger also helps in increasing appetite. Daily consumption of dry ginger reduces the heaviness of the stomach and helps in flushing out the toxins from the body, which helps in feeling hungry at times.
Secondly, it also provides relief from joint pain and arthritis pain. It has abundant anti-inflammatory properties, which help in reducing swelling and pain. It works like a pain reliever on the body. Cough, cold and breathing problems are seen especially in the approaching winter. In such a situation, dry ginger loosens the phlegm accumulated in the lungs and opens the respiratory tract.
Now the question is which people should avoid consuming dry ginger. The nature of dry ginger is hot, hence do not consume dry ginger during summer season, as it can cause burning sensation in the stomach. Apart from this, people suffering from piles or high BP should also not eat dry ginger. Pregnant women should also not consume dry ginger. This may be responsible for pre-mature delivery.
