Mumbai, July 14 (IANS). Meenu Bhaisare, staff nurse of Bombay Hospital and Medical Research Centre, facilitated the safe delivery of a woman in the running Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express train. Everyone is appreciating his wisdom and dedication in the train.
According to a statement issued by the Bombay Hospital and Medical Research Centre, nurse Meenu Bhaisare was traveling in coach S5 (seat number 22) of the train on June 3. At around 2 o’clock in the night, Anjum (who was nine months pregnant), who was traveling with us, suddenly started having labor pains. Passengers tried to get medical help several times, but could not get immediate help as the train had left Bhusaval Junction and there was no scheduled stop ahead. Railway staff told passengers that medical help would take about 30 minutes to reach the train.
On examining the pregnant woman, Bhaisare found that the uterine sac had already burst and the baby’s head had started coming out, which showed that delivery was about to take place. He immediately took up the responsibility and with the help of the passengers traveling along with him, got the woman delivered safely in the moving train while keeping in mind the privacy of the woman.
After the birth of the child, Bhaisare carefully clamped the umbilical cord with a clean thread. In the absence of clean surgical instruments, a passenger provided a knife, which was thoroughly cleaned before cutting the umbilical cord. After this he took care of both the mother and the newborn baby. They helped the mother change into the clean clothes she had brought with her, cleaned the baby, and made sure the newborn was safely placed near the mother for breastfeeding.
Railway officials later arranged medical help at Chalisgaon railway station, where the mother and newborn baby were safely handed over to the medical team for further examination and care. After this the rest of the passengers continued their journey to Mumbai.
Talking about this incident, Meenu Bhaisare said that as a nurse, my first priority was to ensure the safety of both the mother and the child. There was no scope for hesitation at that moment. It was just a responsibility to work with confidence and empathy. I am extremely grateful to my co-passenger Rajshree Neware and all the fellow passengers whose cooperation, encouragement and timely help made this safe delivery possible.
